Midwifery: Are there more than one type of midwife?
Yes, there are three:
Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM) Registered nurses who have a masters degree in midwifery. Although most CNM’s strive to make the birth
experience as natural as possible, they work under the guidance of a physician, and are required to adhere to strict medical protocols.
Direct Entry Midwives Traditional midwives are typically trained through midwifery schools and apprenticeship programs. They are not subject
to the medical guidelines imposed on CNM’s because they typically work independently, providing prenatal care and assisting women as they give birth at home or in free-standing birth centers.
Certified Professional Midwives (CPM) (This is my certification) The same training and apprenticeship programs as Direct Entry
Midwives - However, in addition to their training, CPM’s have proven their competency by passing written and practical skills examinations developed by the North American Registry of Midwives.
